One contemporary artist explores the legacy of Surrealism on his artistic imagination

On view through September 5, 2025 Category: Contemporary, Murals, Pastels

About the show: Get ready to experience a transformation at the Currier as renowned contemporary artist Nicolas Party creates pastel murals on the museum walls in conversation with iconic and lesser-known Surrealist works. It isn’t just an exhibition: it’s a portal between two worlds.

Curated by Lorenzo Fusi, Nicolas Party and Surrealism: An Artist’s Take on the Movement is on view at the Currier from April 10 to September 1, 2025.

  •  It features 11 works by Nicolas Party created between 2020 and 2025, and eight Surrealist works, including pieces by Joan Miró, Gertrude Abercrombie, and Yves Tanguy.

The show is generously supported by M. Christine Dwyer and Michael Huxtable, with additional support from KARMA (New York and Los Angeles), kaufmann repetto (Milan and New York), Ben & Karina Kelley, and the Susan E. Strickler Exhibition Fund.

The conversation:

100 years ago, the Surrealist Manifesto called on creative individuals to re-envision the possibilities of art. This landmark work invited artists to depict their interiority instead of simply striving to create accurate renderings of the outside world. It also honored the strange and the weird -- alongside the beautiful -- and explored the landscape of dreams.
