Slow Art Day

Celebrate Slow Art Day at the Currier. The average museum visitor spends only a few seconds looking at a work of art. What happens when you slow down, take a deep breath, and linger? Slow Art Day is your invitation to see for yourself. NH residents enjoy free admission all day for Second Saturday.

What are the benefits of slow looking?

Spend a few more moments with a work of art and you’ll start to notice new things and enjoy it more fully. Studies also increasingly point to a whole host of feel-good benefits, like lowered stress.

What is the Currier doing for Slow Art Day?

The Currier will mark the occasion by encouraging visitors to slow down, look closely, and spend time with fine art. Join guide-facilitated slow looking sessions at 11 AM and 1 PM centered around three recently-installed works.

  • Hendrick ter Brugghen, Esau Selling his Birthright, about 1627, Rose Marie and Eijk van Otterloo Collection

  • Sanford Biggers, Slow Murder, 2023, Art Bridges

  • Jules Olitski, Pink Fancy, 1965, Collection of Lauren and Bradley Poster, VT

Sessions start at 11 AM and 1 PM in the Historic Court and end with shared reflections in the West Gallery.

Do I need to be an expert at slow looking?

Of course not! Beginners welcome. Whether this is your first time practicing mindful looking or 100th, you'll be part of a supportive environment encouraging you to get curious, spend a bit more time with art, and be in the moment.

What if I prefer to go at my own pace?

We've got you. Simply pick up a self-guided slow looking activity at Guest Services.

Is Slow Art Day on Second Saturday?

Yes! New Hampshire residents benefit from free museum admission thanks to generous support from St. Mary's Bank and Pamela Diamantis and Morey Goodman. There will also be a slowed-down but super fun Creative Studio art activity – free for all visitors.
