First Thursdays 
Explore your creative potential on the first Thursday of each month at the Currier Museum of Art. Each First Thursday program promises to engage and enrich visitors through art in its many forms. First Thursdays run from 5:30- 7:30 pm and provide a great place to socialize or network after-hours, offering entertaining programming that highlights a wide range of cultural experiences. 

March 4- Exhibition Reception
Celebrate the opening of From Homer to Hopper: American Watercolor Masterworks.  Enjoy complimentary light refreshments and a brief talk by museum director, Susan Strickler.

April 1 - ARTalk and Film Screening:
Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler's Manhatta (1921)
View this culturally significant American modernist abstract film about Lower Manhattan by photographer Paul Strand and painter/photographer Charles Sheeler. Bruce Posner will discuss Strand’s and Sheeler’s collaborative process and the film’s digital restoration. In addition, the special relationships between these artists and the Currier will be explored including Sheeler’s commissioned Amoskeag Canal (1948), photographs by Strand, and a selection of gifts from Strand.

ARTalk lectures and gallery talks explore works of art in the Currier’s collection from a variety of angles and put them into cultural, social, and historical contexts. No reservations are necessary. ARTalks are free with museum admission.

Watercolor Techniques and Materials
Sunday, March 28, 3 pm, Auditorium
Judith Walsh, professor of paper conservation at Buffalo State College and former paper conservator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, will discuss the techniques and materials used by some of America's best known watercolor painters.  Her illustrated talk will consider how the change of papers and pigments available to watercolorists affected their artistic achievements.  Ms. Walsh has published and lectured extensively on the watercolors of Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and Georgia O'Keeffe, among others.



Artist Demonstration: Watercolor Techniques
Sunday, April 25, 2:00-4:00 pm
Ever wonder how such a diverse range of styles can be achieved using watercolor? Watch practicing watercolor artist and Art Center instructor Ann Domingue demonstrate a variety of watercolor techniques and then examine how they were used by artists in From Homer to Hopper: American Watercolor Masterworks.

Film Screening: Winslow Homer: Society and Solitude 
Tuesday, April 6
Get to know Winslow Homer the artist and the man. The documentary Winslow Homer: Society and Solitude chronicles the life and artistic evolution of one of the greatest American painters of the nineteenth century. The film also tells the story of the personal side of Homer, who in his youth lived in the midst of a lively and cosmopolitan New York City art scene, but who gradually withdrew from public life. The filmmaker and professor at the University of Memphis, Steven John Ross, is best known for his award-winning PBS documentaries and has presented this film at numerous art museums and archives across the country.  The film will be introduced by Susan Strickler, director of the Currier Museum of Art and curator of the exhibition Homer to Hopper: American Watercolor Masterworks which is on view at the Currier through June 7.

6:15 pm: film screening (109 minutes)

Painting the Currier Neighborhood
Saturday, May 15; rain date Sunday, May 16
Watercolor artists often captured landscapes and architecture when painting en plein air, or in the open air. Experience this first-hand and paint the Currier neighborhood. Bring your own art supplies or purchase some at the museum gift shop. Watercolor artists Ann Domingue and Sylvia Brofos will be available throughout the neighborhood to provide feedback as you work. Join Aurore Eaton, executive director of the Manchester Historic Association, at 12:30 for a historic tour of the neighborhood. Guidelines and special information will be provided upon check-in at the Visitor Services Desk. PD hours available!

Music at the Currier

Distinguished Artist Concert: Borromeo String Quartet 
Sunday, March 21, Pre-concert tour at 1 pm, Concert at 2 pm
Considered "Simply the best there is" by the Boston Globe and back for their second performance at the Currier, the critically acclaimed Borromeo String Quartet will perform works by Beethoven, Bach, and contemporary composer Lera Auerbach.  Come early for a tour of American Modern works from special exhibition From Homer to Hopper: American Watercolor Masterworks.  Stay after the performance to enjoy light refreshments and meet the members of the Quartet.

Enjoy the spring in New York City! Visit museums, shops, restaurants, or friends. Prices include transportation only. The coach departs from the Catholic Diocese of Manchester (153 Ash Street) promptly at 6:30 am. Arrive in Manhattan about 11:30 am to spend the day in the city. Re-board the coach at 7 pm to arrive back to the Diocese about 11:30 pm.
